Discover the healing power of herbs through massage.
Abhyaṅga is the Āyurvedic treatment applying herbal oils to the body for healing. This technique is different than massage, because the practioner does not work on the muscles and tissues with the hands, but uses the hands to apply herbal oils, which do the healing work. Special techniques and positions are traditionally used in Ayurveda to apply the oils so they penetrate through the pores and deep into the tissues and organs. Abhyanga is said by the Ayurvedic texts to improve health, immunity, strength, flexibility, and longevity, to reduce the effects of stress and aging, to improve circulation, to promote restful sleep and mental peace, to provide protection from the sun and wind and weather changes, among other benefits. It is one of the best treatments for all conditions arising from vata.
Traditional Ayurveda recommends daily self-abhyanga before bathing. Performed in a clinical setting, abhyanga can be a useful part of a regimen for healing. It is a non-invasive procedure which is generally very safe to practice and deeply nourishing and relaxing for clients. This course will provide a detailed introduction to the practice for healing practitioners to apply in a clinical setting. In-person participants will receive the opportunity to give and receive an abhyanga if desired. |
