"OM Kitchen," by Swami Gananthamritananda Giri is an exceptional cook book on Ayurveda. It is a beautiful work of art, which has the power to change lives. From the finesse of each recipe, to the nourishing graphic designs, to depth of it's content, this cookbook is truly a rare gem. It will help many souls searching for healing through natural means, and it will become an indispensable, practical text on Ayurvedic cooking for modern audiences. I am so grateful to have had access to Swami Ganathamritananda's teachings (and counseling) on Ayurveda, because my life has been transformed through association with them. I have been a student of Swamiji's for eight years, which has had a tremendous effect on my health (mentally, spiritually and physically) in ways which I had been seeking for ten years prior. Thanks to Ayurveda and Swami Gananathamritananda's counseling, I have healed illnesses which Western medicine considers incurable. My blood tests for hypothyroidism have all come back negative, I have partially released enormous emotional/mental blockages from severe trauma, I haven't had an asthma attack in almost a year whereas I was having them a couple times a week, and my allergic rhinitis, in combination with Western medicine, has been greatly lessened. This has been done through the consistent taking of herbs over a long period of time, spiritual practice, counseling, and diet for balancing the doshas. Ayurvedic diet and mental "diet" have had an enormous effect on my health, my knowledge of which has almost entirely come from Swamiji. Therefore, for the dedicated reader, finding "Om Kitchen, vol. 1," is more than a cookbook- it is a way out of endless suffering. It gives you the tools to create a better future for yourself. When searching for answers, it's common to initially find only surface level content, written by novices on the subject, and that claims to hand you what you seek. It is rare to find living teachings, which hold efficacy and wisdom, and have the power to help you transform your life. For those people like me, who spent years searching for answers as to how to heal myself, this cookbook will be like finding water in the desert. Even rarer still is the chance to meet and learn from such a teacher. "Om Kitchen" gives everyone the chance to invite Swamiji and his teachings, and the ancient Indian wisdom of Ayurveda, into your home, in the most nourishing and sincerest of ways.

Cooking, to me, has always seemed an alchemical art. A lot of my dishes left quite a bit to be desired and would often be passed over for some take-out or a carb-heavy comfort food. I knew it was better to make healthy, fresh food at home but didn't think it was possible for me.
I was genuinely excited to receive this cookbook and start trying some of the recipes. The book is laid out simply and cleanly with gorgeous photographs accompanying each recipe. The book is written in a very easy-to-read and conversational style. Much of the book is dedicated to a primer on the Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle. I found myself having a new experience learning to cook the Indian dishes, but also tasting the same flavors I've had eating at Gananath's ashram. It is fun and empowering to be able to cook authentic South Indian food right at home. Cooking this way does take more time, more effort and a little bit of planning, but I have found it to be absolutely worth it.
When working, I would often skip a mid-day meal - I felt like I had to. Lunch would make me groggy, sleepy, or give me a headache. I couldn't afford to ruin my day like that, so I would simply skip the meal. I had accepted unhealthy eating and its lifestyle as a fact. Learning about Ayurveda, and cooking the recipes in this book, have shown me food doesn't have to leave me feeling uncomfortable or bloated. In fact, it can leave me feeling energized, alert and clear-headed. In a way, I feel like I'm reclaiming my life.
Reading through the book feels like an initiation, into both the world of South Indian cuisine but also Ayurveda. The age-old wisdom of this lifestyle is distilled here in simple recipes and teachings. It is felt deeply that this is how people used to live - in tune with their bodies, eating fresh foods, looking forward to enjoying each meal. I feel pride in learning to make delicious, healthy meals and humbly thank Swamiji and the Soma Matha team for their service to the world.
