About the Celebration
Thai Pusam is celebrated as the day that Goddess Parvati gave Lord Murugan / Karttikeya his Vel to defeat the demon Soorapadman. The festival occurs in the month of Thai / Makara (when the Sun is transiting Capricorn Sign according to Vedic sidereal calculations). The festival is marked by the Moon's transit through Pushya Nakshatra.
Lord Murugan is the Second son of Shiva and Parvati and the brother of Ganesha. He is said to sit at the Manipura Chakra and govern willpower. He is the Lord of Yogis, who stimulates the process of spiritual awakening. His vel (spear) is a symbol of precision, speed, and one-pointed focus. Lord Murugan brings quick success when we pray to him and helps us to empower our spiritual practice and worldly accomplishements. His mantra ॐ शरवणभव "om śaravaṇa-bhava" can be chanted to earn his grace. He is pleased by meditation and spiritual austerities and protects those who pray to him with faith from all sort of dangers from others and from our own ignorance and egoism. Sponsor the Abhishekam for $11, $27, $108 or choose your own amount. |
