Brahmi is considered the best herb in Ayurvedic medicine for meditation and the mind.  It is called brahmi because it brings about the consciousness of Brahma (God).  It has a cooling energy and a sweet and bitter taste.  Brahmi clears toxins from the deep tissues of the body and clear deep-seated emotions from the subconscious.  It helps in particular to remove toxins from drugs and narcotics.  It helps to release unresolved trauma, and removes anger from the heart and liver.  It calms the mind and emotions and is one of the best herbs for pitta dosha.  Brahmi has a tonic action on the mind and nerves and increases memory.  Its regular use is helpful to prevent Alzheimer's and dementia.  It is good for all kinds of mental illness including mental retardation and it has the spiritual power to protect from negative astral influences.  Brahmi can be an effect herb to counter insomnia, because it stimulates the flow of blood to the brain which calms excessive thought.  Brahmi should be taken in moderation due to its power to increase the flow of oxygen to the brain.  In excess it may cause dizziness and fainting.  As a mental tonic it may be taken with ashwagandha and vacha.  For a liver tonic it may be taken with bhumyamalaki and kutki.  As a heart tonic it may be taken with arjuna, cinnamon, and rose petals.  To reduce anger and high pitta it may be taken with rose, and ushira.
