Ayurvedic Herbal Formula for Cuts and Burns

For cuts, burns, rashes, and insect bites or stings a simple Ayurvedic herbal preparation may be used for healing.  This is a great blend for cuts in particular, like herbal iodine.  The astringent qualities of this blends help cleanse the blood, stop bleeding, promote healing, and reduce the chance of infection.  These same herbs can be used to help treat eczema and many other conditions of the skin.  This powder is made into a poultice by adding liquids or can be taken internally to treat infections, fevers, toxic blood conditions, or to assist in recovery from food poisoning.  It is always wise to seek the advice of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before taking any herbs internally.

To make this blend, powdered herbs are mixed together in equal quantities.

mañjiṣṭhā - Indian madder (Rubia cordifolia)
haridrā - turmeric (Curcuma longa)
āmalaki - Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica)
haritakī - yellow myrobalan (Terminalia chebula)
vibhītaka - beleric (Terminalia bellirica)
nīmba - neem (Azadirachta indica)
yaṣṭīmadhu - licorice (Glycyrrhiza glbra)

A simpler version of this formula could be made using equal parts of turmeric and sandalwood or vetiver root.

(If using sandalwood, it is important to be sure of the purity. Sandalwood is very expensive and so it is often adulterated by adding other natural and chemical substances. So if using sandalwood especially on cuts, be sure that it is pure, food-grade sandalwood powder)

These herbs can be bought online from Banyan Botanicals

To treat a cut or bite, first the cut is washed with soap and water to remove dirt and other pathogens.

Then a small amount of the herbs are mixed to a thin paste by adding pure water.  Honey could be used in place of water for cuts.  For burns, rashes, acne or bug bites, aloe gel could be used instead of water for mixing the paste.  For eczema, sesame oil could be used in place of water.  Coconut oil is also suitable for sunburn or dry rashes.

The paste of herbs is then applied in a thin layer to the effected area and allowed to dry.

Once dry, the paste of herbs can be covered with a bandage to hold the herbs in place longer.  Every day the bandage should be removed and the wound washed and the herbs replaced with new ones.

This simple herbal treatment will protect the wound from infection, and speed the healing process.

* Note: Be careful as the turmeric and manjishtha in this blend may stain fabric.
