Yoga is now more popular than ever before, but its true purpose as a system for spiritual realization has been all but forgotten. Yoga is now being taught for the much lesser benefits of health, mental peace, reducing stress, and for increasing flexibility. But beyond these very limited benefits, Yoga is a system of self-transformation, capable of uniting the soul with its source, the formless Absolute pervading the universe. The inner knowledge of Yoga cannot be received from books or from Yoga classes. In older times, the mystical teachings of Yoga were imparted energetically from Guru to disciple. Practice was not attempted by a student without first receiving teachings about the eight limbs of practice designed to help prepare the student for the changes in consciousness which are brought about by the practice. Before physical practices commenced, a certain code of conduct was adopted in order to ensure that the student was prepared to face the many challenges and tests along the path of awakening gracefully and without causing themselves needless pain and suffering. The practice requires great will-power, patience, humbleness, and discipline. It is not for everyone. For many Yoga is merely aerobics, and they do not desire to seek anything more. But for sincere seekers who have the spiritual maturity to seek something beyond this worldly existence and to dedicate themselves to the service of humanity, Yoga offers a great opportunity to transcend mundane existence and to realize the Divine, which is the ultimate purpose for human life.
