Soma Ayurveda Kalpa (Herbal Pharmacy)
At the Soma Educational Pharmacy, students can see, feel, smell, and taste traditional Ayurvedic and Native herbs and learn how to use them in the traditional Ayurvedic formulations.
Ethics for sustainably gathering, growing, and purchasing fresh and natural herbs are taught along with respect for plant life. When awareness of and respect for the sacrifice of the plants used for medicine is maintained while preparing herbal medicines their efficacy is greatly increased.
Students learn the ancient techniques for preparing traditional Ayurvedic formulas along with knowledge of the safe dosages and methods of administration.
Traditional formulas made at the kalpa include:
- Svarasams - Fresh Juices
- Phāṇṭams - Infusions
- Kvāthams - Decoctions
- Chūrṇams - Dry Powders
- Guṭikāms - Tablets
- Avalehams - Herbal Confections
- Ariṣṭhams - Herbal Wines
- Ghṛtams - Herbal Ghees
- Tailams - Herbal Oils
- Dhūpanams - Fumigants
- and many other traditional Ayurvedic
These ancient preparations each help in specific ways to increase certain properties of the herbs and also to facilitate the application of the herbs to the organs in the body most in need of herbal treatment without unduly effecting other bodily systems for gentle and effective results.
Diagnosis and treatment methods are taught along with Ayurvedic nutrition and herbalism. Organic and sustainable methods of propagating, growing, preparing, and using herbs are taught. People learn in the traditional way, by coming and helping Swamiji with his work.
